How are rental EPIRBs registered?
Do I have to contact NOAA to "activate" the EPIRB
before I leave on my trip?
All 406 MHz EPIRB owners are required by law to
register their beacon's unique identifier number (UIN)
with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). This means that each beacon's
signal is unique to the vessel to which it is
registered. On the registration card, NOAA asks for
a description of your vessel, making it easier for
search and rescue forces to locate you in an
emergency.
When you rent a beacon, BoatU.S. will ask you for
the same information you would provide to NOAA on
their registration card. We have provided NOAA and
the Coast Guard with a toll-free number to our
Emergency Dispatch Center that is staffed 24 hours/7
days by trained emergency response staff. In the
rare event you need to activate your rental beacon,
BoatU.S. Emergency Dispatch staff will forward NOAA
and the Coast Guard the information you provided at
the time of rental. Note that the EPIRB is
registered to BoatU.S. - you do not need to contact
NOAA before your trip.
What boat information do I Need to provide when I
place my order?
When you place your order, we will ask you for the
name, make, and descriptive information about your
boat - anything that will help to identify your
vessel during a rescue. We will ask for a short
itinerary - departure point, destination, number of
persons aboard.
You will also need to provide the names of 2
emergency contacts with their phone numbers, the HIN
number, the boat registration or documentation
number, the type of engine, and the purpose of your
trip.
If you order your EPIRB rental via or Mail Order
hotline or Online, we will request your fax number
in order to send you the Terms and Conditions of the
rental. If you do not have a fax, we can send the
Terms and Conditions via e-mail. If you have
neither, we will send the Terms and Conditions via
postal mail - be sure to account for the mailing
time as we cannot ship your order until we receive a
signed copy of the Terms and Conditions.
How do I receive my order?
We send your EPIRB to the address you provide via
UPS 3-Day Select service. We will use UPS 2-Day or
Overnight service as needed, although a small
surcharge will apply to make up for the difference
in shipping costs.
How far in advance should I call to place my order?
Our Mail Order Program can take reservations up to
6 months
in advance of your trip, although we ask that you
call at least
7
working days prior to the date that you need to have
your EPIRB to allow for shipping and paperwork
processing time. If you call less than 7 days prior
to your trip, a small surcharge may apply, to make
up for the difference in shipping charges.
If you ship me an EPIRB, how do I return it at the
end of my rental time?
All shipping charges, including return shipping, are
included in the $50/week rental fee, for all order
shipped within the 50 states. Included with your
order is a pre-paid UPS return form. Simply fill
out the return address section of the form and
follow the return instructions included with your
rental.
Can I Rent an EPIRB for use outside of the United
States?
Although EPIRB's have global coverage, for shipping
reasons, we must limit our rentals to the waters of
the following countries and territories outside of
the United States: Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, U.S.
Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. There is a $25
shipping surcharge to orders shipped to or from
these areas.
