2003 Recipients
  • Bay Foundation of Morro Bay of Morro Bay, CA, was awarded $1391 to install 13 signs showing the location of pump-outs and where to purchase and recycle oil absorbent pads on the Morro Bay waterfront and in Morro Bay State Park.
  • Tropical Audubon Society, Inc. of Miami, FL, was awarded $1600 to purchase 32 monofilament line recycling bins and 32 volunteer “tool kits.”
  • Partners for Conservation of Burlington, IA, was awarded $2000
    to print 1,375 decals for boat windshields reminding boaters to bring their trash home with them.
  • Everglades for Everyone of Everglades City, FL, was awarded $1685
    to develop, print, and mail 5,000 “Code of Ethics for Boaters and Fishermen in the Everglades” brochures.
  • Boston Harbor Association of Boston, MA, was awarded $2000 to develop and print 1,500 brochures directed at boaters on ways to protect water quality in Boston Harbor.
  • Sea Scout Ship 1797, BSA of Winthrop, MA, was awarded $1500 to build a clean water and boating safety mobile educational trailer for use at public events.
  • St. Mary’s River Project of St. Mary’s City, MD, was awarded $1922
    to develop and print 100 educational signs that educate boaters about local environmental issues.
  • St. Joseph Power Squadron of St. Joseph, MI, was awarded $1363
    to print 12 signs, 11 counter signs and run two ads reminding boaters to keep their waterways clean.
  • Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation of Portsmouth, NH, was awarded $1232 to print brochures and eight signs for the “Boater Awareness Project.”
  • Alliance for a Living Ocean of North Beach Haven, NJ, was awarded $700
    to produce 50 signs reminding boaters to stay 100 feet from the shoreline.
  • Lake Mead Boat Owners Association of Las Vegas, NV, was awarded $1188 to print 10,000 flyers and 10,000 business cards to educate boaters about preventing the westward spread of zebra mussels.
  • Willamette Riverkeeper of Portland, OR, was awarded $1800 to design and print 4,000 “River Friendly Boating Guides to the Willamette River.”
  • Lake Metonga Association, Inc. of Crandon, WI, was awarded $1796
    to erect two educational bulletin boards and purchase two power washers to help prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species.

2002 Recipients

  • Baltimore County Sailing Center; Baltimore, MD: to conduct an on-the-water research program to collect and identify non-point source pollution in the Herring Run watershed.
  • Baltimore Yacht Club; Baltimore, MD: for the "Leading the Way for Clean Water on the Chesapeake Bay" campaign from the Club’s fuel dock.
  • Deep Creek Yacht Club; Brooklyn, NY: to implement a "Green Boating Initiative" pledge campaign in the Gateway National Recreation Area.
  • Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound; Larchmont, NY: to distribute prizes to junior sailors who exhibit environmentally-sensitive behavior while boating.
  • Liberty Yacht Club; Jersey City, NJ: to implement a spring clean up event at the water's edge of Liberty State Park as part of the "Keep the Harbor Clean!" campaign.
  • Maine Marine Trade Association; Portland, ME: to implement the "Fill Don't Spill" campaign for Maine marinas and boaters.
  • North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy; Hixson, TN: for a clean boating campaign in the North Chickamauga Creek watershed.
  • Save the Sound; Manhasset, NY: to partner with the Manhasset Bay Protection Committee to distribute bilge socks with flyers on clean boating tips.
  • Schooner Sound Learning; New Haven, CT: to produce "Seven Sound Tips" brochures for anglers, sailors and power boaters to compliment their "Dirty Dozen" traveling displays of marine debris.
  • Shark River Cleanup Coalition; Neptune City, NJ: to produce brochures to educate boaters about "no discharge" zones, pump-out locations, and non-point pollution.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary - Flotilla 7-3; Cleveland, OH: to produce "Officer Snook Water Pollution" activity books for children to address environmental issues specific to the Great Lakes watershed.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary – Flotilla 87; Lake Anna, VA: to use signs to educate boaters about trash disposal and pump-out laws.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary - Division 3, District 11 North; Northern California: to partner with the City of Sacramento to produce brochures locating area pump-out locations, public restrooms and marinas.
  • U.S. Power Squadrons, District 13; Los Angeles, CA to Salt Lake City, UT: to produce pamphlets to acquaint boaters in the Los Angeles area with their impact on local environmental conditions.

2001 Recipients

  • Blue Whale Yacht Club, Harrison Township, Michigan.  Funding for a poster campaign to show the harm and hazards of improper waste disposal on the Great Lakes watershed.
  • Buffalo Aqua Club, Buffalo, New York. Funding for the "Boat It Out, Boat It In" program that uses flyers, posters and nylon bags with a message to encourage boaters and SCUBA divers to bring trash back to shore.
  • Friends of Casco Bay, South Portland, Maine. Funding for printing 2,500 brochures that promote the local Vessel Pump-Out Program and educate the public about environmentally safe boating practices.
  • Hudson Beach Yacht Club, Hudson, Florida. Funding for a children’s "It’s Your Gulf, Keep It Clean" Poster Contest and the printing and posting of winning posters at area boat launch ramps.
  • Marine Industries Association of South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Funding to print and distribute the brochure, "A Boater’s Guide to Manatee Protection."
  • Orange County CoastKeeper, Newport Beach, California. Funding for the Boat Fuel Clean-Up Project on fuel docks in Huntington Harbour, Newport Harbor and Dana Point.
  • Potomac Conservancy, Arlington, Virginia. Funding for multi-lingual brochures that promote low impact fishing practices in the area, with particular emphasis on Asian and Latino communities.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 04-08, Washington Island, Wisconsin. Funding to develop the curriculum for a program that teaches children at local schools about marine pollution.

2000 Recipients

  • The Earth Girls Rochester, NY to help this 4-H club conduct an environmental art contest for boaters; stencil storm drains near marinas; participate in an Environmental Fair; and conduct a coastal cleanup with boaters along Lake Ontario.
  • East Lincoln Betterment Association Denver, NC to install recycling centers for use by boaters and fishermen at boat launching sites on Lake Norman.
  • Estero Bay Buddies Ft. Myers Beach, FL to purchase 1,000 litter bags that will be distributed to boaters as part of the organization’s "Monofilament Madness" day.
  • Golden Triangle Water Safety Council Columbus, MS to purchase 5,000 brightly colored trash bags with environmental messages to hand out to boaters.
  • Great Lakes Historical Society Vermilion, OH to develop a marker buoy system near shipwrecks in Lake Erie to help boaters avoid anchoring on historically significant sites.
  • Lake Powell Yacht Club Lake Powell, AZ to produce laminated maps and decals with environmental messages for installation at launch ramps, docks, and marinas on Lake Powell.
  • Lancaster/Morattico Watershed Partnership Farnham, VA to conduct a cleanup to remove debris from Lancaster and Morratico creeks.
  • Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory Philadelphia, PA to work with inner-city youth to design and print 500 color posters with environmental messages that will be distributed at marinas, boating supply stores and public boating facilities.
  • Reedville Fisherman’s Museum Reedville, VA to conduct a workshop that teaches participants how to build oyster floats, seed them with oysters and maintain them to grow oyster beds in the lower Chesapeake Bay.
  • Waukegan Citizens Advisory Group Waukegan, IL to obtain 150 oil, trash, and "Save the Great Lakes" pollution decals to hand out to boaters.

1999 Recipients

  • Hunter Sailing Association of Lake Lanier Atlanta, GA, to establish aluminum recycling at five popular marinas on Lake Lanier.
    Ostego Bay Foundation Ft. Myers Beach, FL, to produce 10,000 brochures on oil spill prevention and assemble 120 small spill prevention kits that include fuel absorbent materials to distribute at boater workshops and boat shows.
  • Natural Resources Protective Association Staten Island, NY, to hold regular cleanups to remove trash from salt marshes, tidal wetlands, and beaches, enhance wildlife areas and reduce the hazard of floating debris to boaters in the Great Kills Harbor area.
  • Boat Owners Association of Tennessee Elizabethton, TN, to control shore line erosion in Watauga Lake by laying down rolls of special material made from coconut fiber, helping stabilizing plants to grow and protect the shore.
  • Calusa Cruise Club New Port Richey, FL, to hold frequent cleanups of Anclote Key, a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, and educate boaters about the local environment by putting up signs around the island.
  • Absecon Island Power Squadron Absecon, NJ, to produce 10 signs informing boaters about cleanup activities on local rivers.
  • Keep Manatee Beautiful, Inc.(KMB) Bradenton, FL, to install three kiosks at marinas and boat ramps throughout Manatee County that provide information on marine pollution and other environmental topics.
